Chapter 21- Author's note of Far North

Summary: In chapters 21-the authors note they had decided that after turning back to the cabin twice they had to take a chance and head straight to Nahanni Butte. Gabe had convinced Raymond that they both could get there alive even in the bad conditions they were in. So they were on their way and were surviving fine until they found the ice bridge they still had to face and had collapsed in the past. They were able to make it though together and after some more walking they found smoke coming up and they realized they had found the village. Raymond family welcomed them and carried them up the hill to their homes. Then some time later Gabe and his father went to a party to celebrate and Raymond told what he knew about johnny and the older people who had known him told his stories in Johnny's memory. In the author's note it talked about how he came up with the idea for Far North and that it was inspired by the Northwest Territories, a place he'd visited with his wife in1993.
Response to question 10: After reading this book my perspective on certain things have changed. This story really reminds me not to take things for granted. In the story Gabe and Raymond were struggling to keep warm, have food, and shelter. Those were probably things they didn't think about until they lost them.So its good to realize what you have.
Another thing this book taught me is to learn as much as you can from your elders and parents. They wont always be there. And even if you think something they are telling you that you think is boring or something its good to listen because it could really help you in the future. Like when Johnny had taught them to hunt. What he taught them had saved their lives after he had passed away. Its important to learn as much form them as possible because they probably only want to tell you because its helpful or for your own good.

chapters 17-20 of Far North

Summary: In chapters 17-20 at the beginning it talked about how they had hiked up the mountain and were hunting sheep. So along the way they camped out from time to time and it talked about how Raymond kept seeing a raven that apparently wasn't really there or at least that no one could see. So he keeps seeing the raven and he thinks its a sign of food somewhere so the follow the imaginary raven and find a clearing with a moose surrounded by wolves after 2 days. Then Gabe had to find a way to haul half the meat back to the cabin. On the way he ran into some overflow problems and almost got frostbite. And when he got back and built a cache for the meat and later found it torn down alongside bear tracks. They build a new cache in a tree and get cornered up there by the bear and when it finally goes away Gabe ends up spraining his knee and Raymond hurts his ankle even worse than that. When they get back to the cabin they talk for a while and Gabe gets the idea to start building a new cabin. Then one day when he's out to get water and the bear comes back and they give it some meat to go away and on the way back they talk about their home lives and Gabe convinces Raymond that he can get them both home after Raymond tells him he's almost certain they wont make it out with the condition they were in.
Response to question 5: The one name I think I would change in the book if I were the author would probably be Raymond's. I can tell his family is kind of traditional in the old ways and stuff like that. Even Gabe's parents seem kind of traditional in a way with what I've read about them. But Raymond's personality seems a little less formal than his name suggests so I would have chosen a name or even nickname that better fits his personality. I think I'd name him something more along the lines of Jake or maybe Jasper.
If  I were the author I would have been a little more specific as far as the setting. I think the author did a great job with description but they were in the woods and mountains so a lot of the stuff looked the same making it  hard to figure out where exactly they were or. Like the part where it talked about them hiking to through the mountains and them they just went back to the cabin. Were they going to hike to Yukon or not? And why did they turn back when they'd gone so far. It wasn't clear.

chapter 12-16 of Far North

Summary: In chapters 12-16 it was about they set up camp after rafting further down the river. Then it talked about johnny leading them to a cabin further in the woods and that there was a food cache set up there. they continued to manage with little food. Eventually another Chinook came around and they started building traps. They stayed at the cabin a little longer and one day when johnny was out hunting he died of a heart attack. He left them with and envelope telling them that he wished he could he told them the old stories and ways and that it wasn't only to preserve the old ways but lessons on how to keep surviving.Later on they decided they needed to move on to get to Nahanni Butte by hiking up the river because they couldn't find food. So as they headed up the river they ran across a place where the water was unfrozen so they tried the ice bridge and Gabe fell in. Raymond saved his life and they came up with a new plan. They were going to hike to Yukon to get food and just spend the rest of winter there and on their way they go hunting for sheep.
Response to question 2: In chapter 12 the feelings I felt were mostly curious. Who was Patterson and how did Johnny know about that place? In chapter 13 and 14 it was sad. Johnny seemed like he really cared to teach his great nephew about a lot but he died before he got the chance. In chapter 15 I kind of felt bad for Raymond because he just lost a family member and he had to think about how to not die himself instead of be with his other family members.
In Chapter 15 I was also a little scared. The part where he was trying out the ice bridge and he fell in I thought he was going to die. But Raymond pulled him out. I had one question though. Why did Raymond tell him to get up?

chapter 9-11 of Far North

summary: In chapters 9-11  were discussing the issue of food. They only had few more supplies as far as food went from the left. They decided that finding a moose would be their best bet since they had found a riffle in the woods when they were hunting. They didn't find much food only small things and berries and it's getting harder to survive. In the meantime they kept watch for plane that could rescue them but never came.Later a Chinook came(a sudden and drastic change in the whether and temperature). They came up with a plan to build a raft while the river is still unfrozen. After that they finally found a moose and told Johnny about the plan who was reluctant but agreed and they started to build. Johnny turned out to be right and the water froze over before they could make it out but they got pretty far.
Response to question 1: In these chapters my thoughts were mostly about the Chinook. At first I didnt know what it was but my question was: What was so drastic? Did it go from winter to summer instantly? And why did Johnny seem reluctant to make an escape plan. Another thing that made me stop and wonder was: Why was Johnny gone so long just for hunting. He was gone for days.
Something it said was that they say a plain going in the direction they had left. That probably meant they were looking for them. But my thoughts were if there were plains looking for them in that direction why hadn't the found them yet. And they made smoke signals so how come they weren't found yet. And lastly I think they should have gone back if they saw a plain searching in that direction,
